REAL WEDDING > Julia & Marcus Dreosti

As old wives’ tales go, rain on your wedding day is considered good luck.

For Julia and Marcus Dreosti, the wet weather was an unexpected - though not unpleasant - surprise on their February nuptials.

“It was the only day of rain in Adelaide for about six months,” Julia says. “It rained on the way to the church and then stopped when I got there. It also rained when we were trying to get people inside for dinner at the reception, so it was actually perfectly timed. The temperature was in the mid-30s, so it really helped to cool things down.”

It would take more than rain, however, to dampen the spirits of these childhood sweethearts. Though, it took awhile for them to realise that they actually were as such, with the relationship going through peaks and troughs - including a few years’ apart while Julia worked in Sydney and Paris.

Despite the length of time they had known each other – going back to, in fact,  1993 - there were no holds barred for the proposal.

Julia, a lawyer, came home one July night to find flowers, dinner and wine a-waiting. Marcus, a doctor, had also had a three-stone, white-gold ring designed specially at Pure Envy Jewellery. “It was all very romantic - and a big surprise,” Julia says. Seven months later, they wed.

Julia wore an off-the-shoulder, gown from Rapsimo Bridal Wear, with a Princess Diana-worthy train. “It was the first and only dress I tried on,” Julia says. She travelled to her Friday wedding in a family friend’s black Rolls Royce and carried an all-white bouquet.

Her four bridesmaids wore black strapless dresses, cinched in with white bows, from Alfred Angelo. Marcus wore a Hugo Boss tuxedo, complementing his groomsmen also in tuxes.

The ceremony was very traditional, held in a chapel at Marcus’ former school, St Peter’s College. A relaxed reception followed at Glen Ewin Estate at Houghton.

Much eating, drinking and dancing was to be had, though Julia says: “Marcus drew the line at a bridal waltz.” Instead, for the second-to-last song, Julia kicked up her heels with her bridesmaids to Christina Aguilera’s Ain’t No Other Man.

The loved-up couple spent their wedding night at the Medina Grand Adelaide Treasury and enjoyed a “mini-honeymoon” at Byron Bay. An extended holiday though is on the cards for the now Sydney-based couple, with Julia hoping to once again say bonjour to Paris.
