An Ocean of Love: Krystal & Aeron Martinovic
Wednesday, August 26, 2009Krystal Martinovic doesn’t live by the adage, “There are plenty more fish in the sea”. For her, there’s just one. Her groom, Aeron.
The occupational, health and safety coordinator met Aeron, who helps run his family’s seafood business, during a Saturday night out at the General Havelock Hotel.
“Though we had never met before, we worked out that night that our parents already knew each other,” Krystal gushes. “Both our fathers are prawn fishermen in the Spencer Gulf and Aeron had actually just met my parents the week before.” Adelaide’s six degrees of separation clearly at play!
Still, Krystal says Aeron didn’t reel her in straightaway. The pair waited a month before going on a date and, she says, “We hit it off from there”.
The duo dated for six years before Aeron
popped the question. Krystal explains: “I’m originally from Port Lincoln (the
seafood capital of Australia, of course). So, we went back there for New Year’s
Eve with a group of friends. On the day that we were leaving to drive back to
Adelaide, he took me up to the Winters Hill look-out and got down on one knee.”
Krystal could not have been more surprised - though, of course, she happily
said yes.
She later found her dream gown at Jenny and Gerry’s Bridal House. “I tried on
a few dresses at the store and went back to put a deposit on one, with my mum
and sister in tow. Mum said to try on a few more just to get the impact of the first
one. But, when they saw one of the new dresses I tried on, they started crying.
So, of course, I had to go with that one! It was huge, with a lace and beaded
bodice and multiple layers of netting and chiffon for the skirt.” She
teamed this with a pair of Christian Lacroix heels, with Swarovski crystal
detailing, and a teardrop bouquet of white lisianthus and roses.
Jenny and Gerry’s Bridal House also catered
for the outfits of her groom, groomsmen and bridesmaids. “It was excellent getting everything in the one place – I even got my
stationery from its Giftables area,” Krystal enthuses.
Also ideal was the weather for the January
wedding – 26C (just beating Adelaide’s record heatwave). The bride arrived at the
St Michael’s Anglican Church ceremony in a black Mercedes. It was very much a traditional
affair, with a personal touch including music by three of the pair’s friends – singer
Kirsty McCulloch, guitarist Derek Oak and keyboardist Natalie Oak.
Following the ceremony, the bridal party had photos taken about the church grounds and then left in Aeron’s pride and joy – his red 1982 Ford ESP - for snaps at North Terrace in the city and Henley Beach.
A total of 175 guests attended the reception at the Croatian Sports Centre – the Croatian part being a nod to Aeron’s ancestry. Krystal says: “We had some Croatian songs and food, including stuffed cabbage rolls (sarma) and jam roll-style cakes.”
The crème de la crème though was the couple’s wedding cake from Sugar and Spice Cakes. “It was a whopping five tiers, with gold, shimmering icing, swaging on each layer and flowers,” Krystal remembers. “The flavours included traditional fruitcake and triple choc - it tasted amazing!”
The couple performed their bridal waltz to Roy Orbison’s You’ve Got It, before departing at 2am. “The reception definitely had a party atmosphere,” Krystal recalls.
The happy couple spent their wedding night at the Hyatt Regency Adelaide, before honeymooning in Sydney.
